On January 5th, Zsolt Bayer, a Hungarian journalist with links to the ruling party Fidesz, wrote a controversial article in Magyar Hirlap. In response to a murder on New Year’s Eve, where one of the suspects is a Roma, he wrote that “a significant part of Gypsies is not fit for coexistence and is not fit to live amongst people […] [T]his half of the gypsy world (that) has turned into animals. […] And the animals should not be. At all. This is what needs to be done: immediately and by any means.”
The article caused controversy both in Hungary and beyond. The European Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, Viviane Reding, has called the article ‘completely unacceptable’.
